The American College of Radiology (ACR) has updated its appropriateness criteria to allow healthcare providers to choose the most appropriate imaging exam or radiation therapy treatment for more than 1,000 clinical indications.
The criteria improve decision-making and can help prevent both over- and underutilization of imaging, according to the organization.
The continually updated criteria represent a national standard developed by expert panels of physicians from many different specialties, ACR said. The latest version updates 19 appropriateness criteria topics and has eight new criteria, including breast pain, occupational lung disease, and metastatic epidural spinal cord compression and recurrent spinal metastasis.
