The American College of Radiology (ACR) Center for Research and Innovation (CRI) will lead imaging coordination efforts for a multicenter study on patients with severe acute COVID-19.
The COVID-19 Observational Study (CORAL) will consolidate imaging data, clinical data, and outcomes for patients with severe forms of the novel coronavirus disease in order to inform epidemiology and resource utilization. It aims achieve this goal by through the following three related approaches:
- Establishing a registry
- Creating a detailed cohort, including biospecimen collection, clinical phenotyping, and outcomes
- Assessing health systems
The ACR CRI will support CORAL by collecting imaging exams on registry subjects and creating associations between the images and clinical data. The center will also archive images during the study and provide researchers access to images upon study completion.
CORAL is part of the Prevention & Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) network, a group of U.S. National Institutes of Health-funded hospitals that conduct clinical trials in patients with or at risk for critical illnesses. Washington-based critical care physician Dr. Catherine "Terri" Hough will lead the initiative.
