Ohio police are investigating the theft of radiology films from 2,000 to 2,500 patients from a hospital storage room, according to newspaper reports.
A spokesperson for Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green said the old films were being prepared for destruction through recycling when they went missing in March. The hospital believes that the thieves gained access to the film storage area by posing as subcontractors for the company doing the recycling, according to an article in The Blade.
Hospital officials think the films were stolen for their silver content: X-ray film can be melted and the silver extracted and sold for profit, the article noted.
