A radiologist in the Odhav area of Ahmedabad, India, and his wife have been arrested on allegations they participated in illegal sex determinations connected with unauthorized abortions at a guesthouse in Bavla, according to a Times of India report.
The Times' article identified radiologist Harshad Acharya, 58, and his wife, a former nurse named Hemlata Darji, as well as Ashirwad Imaging Centre in Soni Chawl, saying police confirmed that at least five female feticides were performed over eight months. Exposed May 30, the matter is still under investigation following a raid last week.
Darji is believed to have worked as a nurse for more than a decade at private hospitals. The Times reported that Darji was found performing unauthorized abortions without any valid medical qualifications.
The investigation will include sonography centers to determine whether they have been involved in illegal sex determination, according to the report. The Times said Bavla police registered an FIR against Acharya under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.
