Juweid hit with new Iowa medical board charges

Former University of Iowa professor and nuclear medicine physician Dr. Malik Juweid is facing new disciplinary action from the Iowa Board of Medicine.

In the latest twist of a saga that began after Juweid's personnel dispute with the University of Iowa's department of radiology in the early 2000s, the Iowa Board of Medicine is now charging Juweid with failure to complete a required comprehensive physical, neuropsychological, mental health, unprofessional conduct, and/or disruptive behavior evaluation.

The board had initially issued a confidential evaluation order to Juweid in November 2011, but he objected to the order. After Juweid was terminated by the University of Iowa in August 2012, he then informed the board in September 2012 that he had moved out of the country and did not intend to practice medicine under his Iowa medical license at that time. As a result, the board stayed enforcement of the confidential evaluation order and Juweid agreed not to engage in any practice of medicine under his Iowa medical license until he completed the comprehensive evaluation, according to Iowa Board of Medicine's statement of charges.

Juweid subsequently requested a hearing, which took place in June 2013. On August 13, the board concluded that there was "probable cause" to issue a confidential evaluation order requiring Juweid to undergo the comprehensive evaluation within 90 days. Since Juweid has not completed the evaluation, the board chose to charge him.

The disciplinary hearing will be held on March 20, 2014, at the board's offices in Des Moines. Juweid's Iowa medical license became inactive due to nonrenewal on September 1, the board noted.
