Rep. John Barrow (D-GA) has requested that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) investigate potential wrongdoings in the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center's radiology department, according to an article in the Augusta Chronicle.
Barrow's request to Acting Inspector General Richard Griffin was sparked by an anonymous letter sent to a local NBC affiliate. The letter claimed that Dr. Katherine Mathews, from the radiology department at the Augusta, GA, center, ordered unnecessary and invasive medical procedures, the Chronicle said.
Although Charlie Norwood is not one of 26 VA facilities being investigated in connection with recent complaints about falsified records and treatment delays, Barrow believes the news report should be investigated similarly.
The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center has been under investigation by the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs since 2013 for three veteran deaths in 2012 caused by excessive delays in its gastrointestinal program, according to the Chronicle.
