Fla. imaging center reports lost patient records

Florida imaging practice Radiology Regional Center has recently informed patients of a privacy incident involving the potential loss of some of its paper records.

On December 19, 2015, the company responsible for disposing the imaging center's paper records was transporting the records to an incinerator when a small quantity of patient records was released on a street in Fort Myers, FL, according to Radiology Regional Center.

"This incident resulted from the condition of the container used by Lee County Solid Waste Division to transport the records and the Lee County driver's failure to properly secure the container door," the center said in a statement posted on its website.

The records may contain patient names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, health insurance numbers, and other medical status and assessment information. Financial information may also be included in the records, which date from 2005 through 2012.

"Unfortunately, because the spill involved paper records, we could not confirm exactly whose records were retrieved," the center wrote.

Radiology Regional Center conducted numerous searches of the area, however, and believes that virtually all of the records were retrieved.

The center is offering one year of complimentary credit monitoring to all of its patients who may have been affected. The imaging practice has 10 locations in Florida and a mobile mammography coach. It has also provided reading services for physicians and hospitals outside of Florida.
