A Framingham, MA, girl whose family filed a medical malpractice suit against a radiologist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been awarded $11.5 million in damages, according to a June 6 report in the Boston Globe.
The suit claimed that when patient Anna Coelho was 18 months old in April 2009, radiologist Dr. William Denison delayed diagnosis and treatment of myocarditis, which resulted in her going into cardiac arrest and suffering permanent brain damage, the Globe said. Coelho is now 11 but functions at the level of a four-year-old child.
A jury found Denison negligent after a two-week trial, according to the Globe's report. Newton-Wellesley Hospital was not a defendant in the case, the publication said.
