Dear AuntMinnie Member,
This week we're featuring the latest news from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) meeting -- in AuntMinnie.com's new Orthopedic Imaging Digital Community.
AuntMinnie editors are at the conference in Washington, DC, filing daily reports from the show. In a story by staff writer Tracie L. Thompson, for example, U.S. researchers studied whether patients due for hip fracture surgery who also needed coronary revascularization would have better outcomes if hearts were repaired before hips. However, the group's results indicate that doctors might want to think twice before delaying hip surgery in this patient population.
In another article, researchers from a Kansas hospital used a powerful 9.4-tesla MRI scanner to examine trauma victims with peripheral nerve damage to see if they were candidates for surgery. The group reported good visualization of median nerve structures, and said the technique could possibly be migrated to some of the 3-tesla MRI systems that are becoming increasingly popular.
