Dear AuntMinnie Member,
The Image Gently campaign to raise awareness about radiation dose in pediatric CT has won kudos and awards since it was launched in January 2008. This week, the campaign takes a major step forward by expanding into interventional radiology.
That's according to an article we're highlighting this week in our Pediatric Imaging Digital Community. The story details how Image Gently organizers have produced guidelines for interventional pediatric procedures, which are the third largest contributor to pediatric medical radiation dose after CT and nuclear medicine. Although Image Gently advises radiology professionals to reduce CT dose whenever possible, there are times when the modality provides information vital to a diagnosis. One example could be in cases of possible pulmonary embolism (PE), according to a new study by researchers from Children's Hospital Boston.
The group looked at more than 80 patients with signs of PE, and found that CT was able to identify children who were positive for the disease, and even those who had other types of malignancies. Read more by clicking here, or visit the Pediatric Imaging Digital Community at pediatric.auntminnie.com.
