Sanarus Medical of Pleasanton, CA, has introduced an automated, handheld, disposable breast biopsy instrument, the Cassi rotational core biopsy device.
Guided by ultrasound, the device introduces a needle into the breast lump after injection of a local anesthetic. Then the operator pushes a button that "stick freezes" surrounding tissue, adhering it to the needle. Once the needle stabilizes the lump, the cutting cannula rotates and advances mechanically over the needle to core the tissue specimen.
The Cassi device can be used to biopsy a suspicious lump immediately, eliminating the need for a return visit to perform the biopsy.
No capital equipment is required. The Cassi device has been FDA-cleared.
