A new report from market research firm Frost & Sullivan expects that the market for ultrasound systems in sub-Saharan Africa produced revenues of $26.6 million in 2006, and will climb to $47.2 million by 2012.
The study from the San Jose, CA-based firm notes that economic growth, coupled with substantial donor funding targeted at healthcare improvements, is fueling the potential expansion of services. However, the potential growth is balanced against such inhibiting factors as a shortage of qualified radiologists and sonographers, especially in Kenya and Tanzania.
Frost recommends increased funding to training programs to increase the number of medical students, and to upgrade the skills of currently practicing ultrasound end users.
