Rivanna has been awarded a $3 million grant from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program to develop a military-optimized ultrasound guidance system for spinal interventions.
The funds will support modifications to the company’s Accuro 3S system, which can provide real-time imaging guidance during epidural steroid injections to treat back pain and/or spinal injuries, the company said. The new system is called Accuro 3S-MIL and will be more compact and durable within military operational environments, Rivanna added.
Annually, nearly 150,000 personnel in the U.S. armed forces experience back pain and/or spinal injuries, with these conditions resulting in an estimated 6 million limited-duty days, the company noted.
