Cedara Software has signed a development agreement with Chicago-based Alion Science and Technology to supply the U.S. military with ultrasound guidance surgical technology, according to the Mississauga, Ontario-based vendor.
The technology will use suspended animation to protect vital organs from the dangers of oxygen depletion, giving medics more time to stabilize and transport injured soldiers to a medical center. Alion’s solution will use Cedara’s ultrasound navigation software to scan anatomy into a computer that will guide a field medic through the surgical intervention.
The technique will involve puncturing the patient’s chest and positioning a special Alion device. The complete solution will compress the time needed to identify the source of trauma, so medical personnel can act more quickly, with better information, Cedara said.
Under the terms of the agreement, Cedara will provide its imaging software to integrate with portable ultrasound equipment, including the display of 3-D images. Cedara and Alion will work with the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh on the project, according to the firms.
In other news, Memphis, TN-based systems integrator Imagenable will offer Cedara’s full line of I-Suite PACS. The products will be targeted toward imaging centers and small to mid-size hospitals that may otherwise find PACS cost-prohibitive, Imagenable said.
