ASRT: Radiography programs enrollment decreased in 2025

Enrollment in imaging training programs in 2025 decreased, according to a report released December 22 by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).

The report, called "Enrollment Snapshot 2025," consisted of responses from 304 radiologic technology education program directors and tracked entering class enrollments for x-ray, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, sonography, and MRI programs recognized by the ASRT.

The survey found the following:

  • Student enrollment in x-ray programs decreased from 19,815 in 2024 to 19,547 in 2025.
  • Student enrollment in radiation therapy programs decreased from 1,663 students in 2024 to 1,397 students this year.
  • Student enrollment in sonography programs decreased from 5,511 in 2024 to 5,501 in 2025.

There were a few increases, however, with student enrollment in MRI programs increasing from 1,004 in 2024 to 1,261 students this year, and enrollments in nuclear medicine technology programs increasing from 1,403 in 2024 to 1,585 in 2025.

The survey also included faculty staffing data, with program directors reporting an average of 3.9 budgeted faculty positions and 0.29 open positions, for an overall estimated vacancy rate of 7.4%.

"These survey results show that education programs are continuing to try to meet the demand for technologists," said Melissa Culp, ASRT executive vice president of member engagement. "At the same time, faculty vacancies can also pose a potential challenge to enrollments."
