Philips Medical Systems of Andover, MA, has partnered with Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital in Chicago in opening an Ambient Experience pediatric CT suite.
Philips introduced the Ambient Experience concept at the 2003 RSNA show as a means of creating a more patient-friendly environment. In the reception area at Lutheran General Children's Hospital, patients select cartoons and animation themes to be projected on the wall and ceiling of the CT examination room, accompanied by corresponding music, lighting, and sounds, the company said. All effects are triggered by the patient passing a radiofrequency identification card over a reader in the suite, Philips said.
The goal is to make children more comfortable by giving them some control over the exam experience, potentially reducing the need for sedation and repeat examinations, according to Philips.
