Siemens Healthcare has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its Somatom Definition AS Open CT scanner, which can be used in both diagnostic radiology and radiation therapy applications.
A fully dedicated radiation therapy planning system, AS Open provides contouring for planning and has several radiation therapy options and modifications, according to the vendor. It can be upgraded onsite from 20 to 64 slices and is customizable to user requirements, Siemens said.
AS Open includes a bore diameter of up to 80 cm, a regular field-of-view of 50 cm, an extended field-of-view of 80 cm, and a high-definition field-of-view of 65 cm that is optimal for treatment planning, the vendor said.
Its multipurpose treatment table with a bariatric top enables reproducible positioning of patients up to 676 lb, with a deflection of less than 2 mm, Siemens said. A ReferenceFix function aligns the relation between the different coordinate systems of the CT scanner and the linear accelerator, while an open interface provides rendering of moving tumors.
AS Open has a footprint of 200 sq ft and includes Siemens' Complete Dose Protection dose management portfolio.
