In just two years, the RSNA has delivered more than 30,000 de‑identified imaging exams to the Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC), an open-access platform that offers data that can be used for research.
The RSNA's contributions to the MIDRC depository include chest x-rays, CT images, and attendant clinical data such as care setting, discharge summaries, and whether breathing support was necessary. It is supported by the U.S. National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, hosted by the University of Chicago, and jointly developed by the RSNA, the American College of Radiology, and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
"MIDRC is a massive, curated, diverse, multi-institutional imaging dataset that [particularly] enables new insights about the diagnosis and prediction of COVID-19 infection, its complications, and its outcomes," said Dr. Curtis Langlotz, PhD, of Stanford University and the RSNA's Board liaison for information technology and its annual meeting. "From the release of the first set of images to today, we are realizing the benefits of new algorithms and the resulting innovations in machine learning."
