Carestream gets FDA nod for new DR detector

Carestream Health has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its new wireless digital radiography (DR) detector.

The detector is designed for low-dose x-ray use for pediatric, orthopedic, and general radiology applications. It measures 25 x 30 cm and features high detective quantum efficiency (DQE) for lower dose than computed radiography (CR) cassettes or DR detectors based on gadolinium scintillators, according to Carestream.

The more compact size and light weight is designed to help positioning for tabletop exams such as knee, elbow, skull, and other studies that may require a patient to hold the detector or require a smaller field-of-view.

The company expects shipping of the new detector to begin in the third quarter.
