This week in the Letter from the Editor we're featuring lessons from sites that have installed two of the hottest technologies in medical imaging: PET/MRI and digital breast tomosynthesis.
First up is PET/MRI, and we bring you the story of NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, which installed a new hybrid scanner in May. The hospital faced a number of challenges, such as renovations required for the system, but ultimately found the choice of PET/MRI to be a "no-brainer."
A wide variety of clinical applications are available for the modality -- the most obvious being neuroradiology. But Langone radiologists also see potential in musculoskeletal imaging, such as for tracking inflammation.

Building a breast tomo service
Meanwhile, digital breast tomosynthesis is also permeating the clinical realm. The technology could revolutionize mammography screening by giving radiologists a 3D view of breast tissue not found on conventional 2D mammography.
Breast tomosynthesis is no longer experimental, according to breast specialists from facilities that have begun using the technology in daily clinical practice. One site even replaced all of its 2D mammography systems -- nearly a dozen -- with tomo units.
Centers using breast tomosynthesis are finding that the technology can improve cancer detection rates and reduce recalls. Tomo can also give a big marketing edge to the facility that adopts it early.
