The SNM Board of Directors and House of Delegates, in conjunction with the leadership of the society's Technologist Section (SNMTS), have proposed changing the organization's name to the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.
In a letter to the membership in the May issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Frederic Fahey, DSc, SNM vice president elect, and Kathy Hunt, SNMTS president, cited several reasons for the proposal.
The communiqué included the organization's five-year campaign to embrace all molecular imaging modalities, the discipline's ability to provide ways to treat diseases with radioactive medicines, and the inclusion of nonnuclear molecular imaging technologies into SNM, as reasons for the proposal.
"As an organization we now stand prepared to lead the way in translating novel molecular imaging and therapeutic strategies for the new era of molecular and personalized medicine," the authors wrote. "It is appropriate at this critical juncture to consider whether the name 'Society of Nuclear Medicine' adequately describes who we are and where we are headed."
