Electron microscope producer and distributor FEI has entered into a cooperative research and development agreement with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Under the agreement, FEI and NIH will create a "Living Lab Structural Biology Center" to promote structural biology research through the integration of cryoelectron microscopy, nuclear MR spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction, in the hope of accelerating medical discoveries relating to global health challenges such as HIV/AIDS and cancer.
The lab will be located on the NIH campus, according to FEI; scientists from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases will also participate in the research. The research will be supported by the use of FEI's Titan Krios, a transmission electron microscope for structural biology.
Sriram Subramaniam, PhD, senior investigator in the Laboratory of Cell Biology of the National Cancer Institute, will serve as director of the Living Lab, FEI said.
