Bayer develops plastic for imaging devices

Bayer MaterialScience is debuting a new specialty grade of resin primarily designed for use in the medical market, including diagnostic imaging equipment such as CT, MRI, and PET scanners, as well as workstations and kiosks.

Bayblend M303 FR is a nonreinforced, flame-retardant, amorphous, thermoplastic polymer blend of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer for extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming, according to the firm.

The plastic is designed for use in surface device applications, in which the equipment comes into contact with skin.

Bayer added that the material has enhanced chemical and hydrolysis resistance, melt strength for extrusion, and deep draw for thermoforming.
