The Australian government is allocating $168 million ($174 million U.S.) to build a nuclear medicine manufacturing plant to produce the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99).
Scientists at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO) plan to use an existing low-enriched uranium reactor for the production of Mo-99.
The plant will also be designed to safely and economically manage by-products from nuclear medicine manufacturing.
