Medicare coverage for beta-amyloid PET?

Momentum for PET amyloid imaging appeared to be building earlier this week with the publication of criteria spelling out when, how, and why it should be used. Reimbursement is always critical for the adoption of any new technology, however, and a U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) advisory committee meeting on Wednesday may represent a speed bump.

After reviewing the evidence, CMS' Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee found that more studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of Eli Lilly and Avid Radiopharmaceuticals' Amyvid radiopharmaceutical for brain beta-amyloid PET imaging, according to an article by features editor Wayne Forrest.
