Marconi Medical Systems today announced a contract to provide University College London (UCL) with a very high field (VHF) 4.7-tesla MR imager for neurological research and functional brain imaging. The deal also includes a five-year research collaboration agreement, according to Cleveland-based Marconi.
Although Marconi has no current plans to commercialize a 4.7-tesla scanner, the experience gained in testing the system has already been useful in development of the vendor's work-in-progress Orion 3-tesla scanner, according to Linda Eastwood, program manager for Marconi's VHF MR business. Marconi assumed the 4.7T MRI contract with UCL as a result of its acquisition of the VHF whole-body imaging team of Surrey Medical Imaging Systems, which was completed in September 1999.
