MRI manufacturer Fonar continues to benefit from a rigorous defense of its MRI patents. In the company's latest patent victory, HealthSouth has paid the Melville, NY-based company an undisclosed sum to settle Fonar's lawsuit alleging infringement of its MRI technology.
HealthSouth infringed Fonar's multi-angle oblique patent, according to Fonar. No other patents were involved and the terms of the settlement agreement were confidential.
HealthSouth is known primarily as an operator of healthcare services centers, but the company for a time had a foot in the MRI manufacturing arena when it bought imaging center chain Health Images of Atlanta in 1997. Health Images manufactured its own MRI scanners, an operation that was shut down after HealthSouth acquired the company.
In previous years, Fonar has reached settlement agreements with GE, Hitachi, Philips, Siemens, Toshiba, Elscint, and Shimadzu.
