MRI vendor Fonar of Melville, NY, announced it has developed an MRI scanning application to detect and monitor scoliosis, Fonar Dynamic Upright MRI.
Current practice involves routine baseline x-rays for children with abnormal physical findings, followed by posteroanterior and lateral radiographs two or three times a year, according to the company.
Fonar's patent-pending system combines specialized software with a new receiver coil developed for the company's Upright Multi-Position MRI scanner. The system produces a single image of the entire spine in the upright position, providing coronal, sagittal, and axial views of the spine, without the radiation of x-rays. Multiplanar reconstruction provides the measurements required in the diagnosis and management of scoliosis.
