ACR revises accreditation program

The American College of Radiology (ACR) of Reston, VA, has revised its requirements for medical physicists and MR scientists, effective January 1, 2010.

The ACR's changes include board certification or degree and experience requirements to enhance accreditation programs and bring them in line with the existing ACR practice guidelines and technical standards for each modality.

The ACR also has added language to address the use of medical physicist assistants and clarify the levels of supervision and accessibility that qualified physicists must provide to guarantee appropriate guidance and oversight.

The modifications are designed to promote the ACR's goals for quality and safety as the organization prepares accreditation programs for approval by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) of 2008.
