Elekta points to new MR/RT research

Radiation oncology vendor Elekta said the first study evaluating its MR-guided radiation therapy (MR/RT) technology in human subjects showed the system was feasible and offered clinical utility.

In a study published online November 14 in Physics in Medicine & Biology, a team from University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands found that the MR-linac was able to precisely target radiation doses while simultaneously capturing high-quality MR images. This capability enables clinicians to visualize tumors at any time and adapt the treatment accordingly on the treatment table throughout radiation delivery, according to the vendor.

Elekta's MR-linac was used in the study to treat four patients with lumbar spinal bone metastases. A single treatment fraction of 8 Gy was prescribed to the target volume, while the dose to the spinal cord and remainder of the body was minimized, according to Elekta.
