Varian wins U.K. contract, unveils cargo screening technology

Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems reported that it has been selected as a supplier of linear accelerators in the British government's capital investment program for upgrading cancer treatments in its hospitals.

The Palo Alto, CA-based firm said it has been given orders for six of nine new linear accelerators ordered by the U.K. government. Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust in London will receive four new high-energy accelerators, while Bristol Oncology Center is purchasing two Varian low-energy machines, according to the company.

In other news, Varian said that it has developed a new type of x-ray linear accelerator that will enable cargo screening systems to automatically alert operators if suspicious materials are detected.

The Varian Linatron K9 accelerator will make it possible to build cargo screening systems that can scan containers and analyze images to determine the nature of their contents, according to Varian.

The Linatron K9 is a dual-energy accelerator designed specifically for cargo screening. It emits x-rays in a pattern that alternates between two energy levels, allowing it to penetrate 17 inches of solid steel, the firm said.

Varian said it will supply the Linatron K9 to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators who build cargo screening vehicles and facilities.
