Laser-based breast imaging developer Imaging Diagnostic Systems has signed a collaboration agreement with Schering of Berlin. The two firms will evaluate the use of fluorescent dyes developed by Schering for potential application in detecting breast cancer, according to Fort Lauderdale, FL-based Imaging Diagnostic.
Imaging Diagnostic’s CT laser mammography technology is based on the penetration of near-infrared light into tissue. Schering’s fluorescent contrast agent would accumulate in lesions like breast tumors. Use of the contrast agent could potentially improve the sensitivity and specificity of unenhanced optical mammography by providing a unique signal that could be detected by the system.
