FFDM, screening programs to grow in Europe

Breast cancer screening programs and full-field digital mammography (FFDM) in the European market are set to experience growth due to breast cancer being identified as one of the leading causes of death among European women, according to an analysis from Frost & Sullivan of San Jose, CA.

Frost noted that several governments have launched extensive screening and awareness programs across the continent. The firm points to the success of screening programs in Sweden and the Netherlands, where mobile mammography units have contributed to the expansion of the market.

The FFDM segment did not meet initial growth predictions. However, Frost believes that as manufacturers demonstrate FFDM's advantages over conventional film-based mammography, the market segment will take off.

The report, European Mammography Systems Market, states that because FFDM systems cost as much as five times the price of analog systems, the segment has excellent potential to increase the profit margins of market participants.
