Week in Review: Goodbye to #MyRadGirlfriend | Thyroid cancer screening | Virtual show starts Tuesday

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Back in 2016, author and graphic artist Ryan McBeth approached us with the idea of writing a cartoon about radiology. Called #MyRadGirlfriend, the storyline centered on a software engineer, Ryan, and his girlfriend, Andy, a radiology resident at a Philadelphia hospital.

Some four years and 118 cartoons later, we're bringing #MyRadGirlfriend to a close with today's panel. Along the way, #MyRadGirlfriend has explored the trials and triumphs of radiology residency, as well as the challenges of trying to maintain personal relationships during the rigors of radiology training.

We hope you've enjoyed #MyRadGirlfriend's four-year run, and we'd like to thank Ryan for bringing a unique perspective on radiology to AuntMinnie.com. We wish him well in future endeavors.

Thyroid cancer screening

Recent studies have shown that the expansion of Medicare and Medicaid payment for cancer screening studies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has led to higher detection rates for cancers like breast, colorectal, cervical, and lung. Now, a new study is showing the same phenomenon for thyroid cancer.

Researchers compared thyroid cancer incidence rates before and after the ACA was implemented, both in states that expanded Medicaid and those that didn't. They found states that expanded payments had more growth in the number of thyroid cancers detected.

In other news in our Ultrasound Community, researchers from Thomas Jefferson University found that ultrasound can be a useful tool in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome. And a group from Belgium found that lung ultrasound helped in the management of two patients with COVID-19.

Virtual show starts Tuesday

Finally, our Fall 2020 Virtual Conference -- AI, Enterprise Imaging & Beyond -- starts on Tuesday at 9 a.m. EDT. We've assembled a stellar lineup of radiology luminaries to discuss the most pressing issues of the day in artificial intelligence and enterprise imaging. Registration is free -- be sure to reserve your space today.
