Materialise begins research for mitral valve technology

3D printing firm Materialise has begun premarket development of 3D modeling software for planning transcatheter mitral valve replacement and repair procedures.

The company is working with U.S. and European hospitals on the research. It has also partnered with Henry Ford Health System in Detroit to bring that facility's mitral planning workflow -- which was developed in part by Materialise -- to a broader transcatheter mitral valve replacement and repair market, according to the firm.

Those facilities participating in the research will use Henry Ford's workflow with Materialise's Mimics Innovation Suite software. The software features 3D anatomical models that help users assess left-ventricular outflow tract obstructions when planning mitral valve procedures, Materialise said.
