Virtual reality simulates complex liver procedure

Researchers from the University of Virginia Health System have developed a virtual reality training simulation for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedures.

Using any virtual reality headset, viewers can watch Dr. Ziv Haskal simulate this interventional radiology procedure in 360°. Haskal designed the simulation to serve as a teaching tool for training physicians, but he also suggested that patients and nursing students can gather important information by watching the step-by-step guide.

He debuted the technology at the 2018 Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) annual meeting and plans to make the simulation available for free on the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology website.
