Data compression could decrease the bandwidth used by the slip ring that transfers data from a CT scanner's rotating gantry to the reconstruction computer, according to presenter Jochen Wilhelmy of the University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
This would either decrease the cost of the slip ring used in the scanner or allow for higher detector resolutions and/or higher frame rates with the same slip ring, he said. The researchers have developed a compression algorithm that works on small blocks of raw image data and can achieve a bandwidth of 5 to 10 gigabits per second, they said.
"The bandwidth of the slip ring can be at least cut in half when using compression without any visible reduction in image quality," Wilhelmy said.
