CHICAGO - Healthcare information technology developer Misys Healthcare Systems of Raleigh, NC, revealed new features and release dates for the next iteration, version 5.0, of its Misys Radiology RIS product yesterday at the 2005 RSNA conference.
The next release is scheduled to go to beta testers late next month, according to Doug Miller, director of product development for Misys. The firm foresees a full release of the product late in the second quarter of 2006.
The 5.0 iteration, Miller said, will incorporate about 20% of its platform on Microsoft's .NET framework. The firm will move completely to the .NET architecture for Misys Radiology sometime in the second quarter of 2007, according to Penny Reiman, associate radiology product manager for the company.
The next version has several features developed for the purpose of assisting practices with workflow improvement, said Dave Jones, senior product manager of radiology applications. In addition the firm has focused its development energies on tighter integration with its PACS product, Misys Image Management (powered by technology developed by eRad of Greenville, SC).
The developer has implemented a hold queue, at Misys Radiology users' requests, for schedules and orders prior to their delivery into the RIS information stream. This area allows users to verify and validate schedules and orders for clinical appropriateness and protocol prior to their appearance system wide.
Importing and updating of CPT-4 and ICD-9 codes, as well as mapping, has been made available, as has user-defined medical necessity checking. An exam and payor preauthorization feature has been added to the scheduling module, which maps approval requirements to the appropriate exams.
A automated patient tracking capability, that updates from modality through DICOM services, will show up in version 5.0, enabling staff to better track and monitor the progress of imaging exams. This feature supports user-definable workflow patterns that may differ by exam or department, Reiman noted.
The vendor said it has built in tighter integration to voice recognition and digital dictation systems, including the capability for document review. Misys Radiology offers integrated voice recognition, using Burlington, MA-based Nuance's Dragon NaturallySpeaking application. The 5.0 version now has complete support for DICOM structured reporting, allowing radiologist's the capability to further streamline their dictated reports.
Misys has also spent engineering effort on improving integration with its Misys Image Management PACS, providing radiologists the ability to launch a work list from within either the PACS or RIS. The work list is completely filterable to a radiologist's preferences, according to Jones. In addition a radiologist's hanging protocol preferences are saved and are automatically launched on user login to the system. Also, because the RIS/PACS application utilizes Web-based technology, patient reports and images are available to referring clinicians through the system, added Miller.
