Healthcare information systems provider Cerner of Kansas City, MO, reported that it is providing data capture technology in support of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI) 100,000 lives campaign.
The initiative, launched in December 2004, has enlisted more than 2,900 of the estimated 5,000 acute care hospitals in the U.S. All participating hospitals agree to submit monthly data on mortality and inpatient acute care, with the specific aim of reducing mortality by June 2006.
The IHI campaign collects two sets of data from participating hospitals. The first set examines information such as a hospital's number of licensed beds, teaching status, and average daily census. The second set focuses on monthly inpatient mortality data, including the number of inpatient deaths and discharges. As the information is compiled, areas for improvement are targeted, Cerner said.
