Nearly half of the hospitals in the U.S. have joined a private, state, or regional health information exchange (HIE), according to a new report from healthcare technology research and advisory firm CapSite.
This was an increase from its 2011 report, in which one-third of respondents reported that they were HIE-connected.
The Burlington, VT-headquartered company interviewed employees at more than 370 hospitals on the market adoption, market share, market opportunity, and vendor perspective relating to HIEs.
Its 2012 U.S. Health Information Exchange Study reports that CapSite expects the market adoption to accelerate over the next two years as hospitals begin to implement the criteria for stage 2 meaningful use adoption of electronic medical records.
