StorageTek debuts IntelliStore archive

Archiving technology developer StorageTek of Louisville, CO, has introduced a new storage system called IntelliStore.

IntelliStore is designed to give users more control and flexibility in managing their data, particularly data covered by government privacy and security regulations like HIPAA. The product is designed to automate archive-management functions that previously were conducted manually, according to the firm.

IntelliStore is based around StorageTek's FlexLine 600 serial ATA disk-based archive, which the company introduced in 2004. It also provides access to tape-based archiving as a lower-cost option for data that doesn't need to be accessed as often.

The system adds a new layer of data management software that enables users to automatically route their data to either disk or tape archives based on their requirements. Previously, users had to route data manually or add an additional application. Data can also be stored in different "storage pools," such as all of the data from a particular work group.

The system can help users comply with government regulations by supporting fixed content management, in which data are stored to media that cannot be changed or tampered with, StorageTek said.

IntelliStore pricing starts at $75,000 for a 4 TB archive, and additional storage can be added at a cost of $9,000 per TB. The system is capable of growing to provide multiple petabytes of storage, according to the company.

In addition to IntelliStore, StorageTek is introducing an archiving and compliance consulting service designed to help organizations assess their requirements in complying with government regulations on storage. The service will use third-party compliance experts to help companies identify risks to information security resulting from missing or inadequate controls, and provide recommendations for action, according to the company.
