Dear PACS Insider,

The inexorable push to electronic medical records requires digital management of all images, not just those originating from radiology. But it's not easy to accommodate non-DICOM images from specialties such as pathology, ophthalmology, and dermatology.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have developed software that enables the incorporation of nonradiologic images into a radiology PACS network. This software, called SimpleDICOM Wrapper, converts the nonradiology files into a DICOM format, and also features a customizable interface designed for the specific needs of each department, according to Dr. Steve Uttecht. He discussed the university's experience with the software at the 2005 RSNA meeting in Chicago.
