A radiologic technologist (RT) who ran an equipment contracting scheme at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio has been ordered to serve four years in prison and pay more than $400,000 in restitution.
Lawrence Fenti received the sentence on September 26 before Chief U.S. District Judge Fred Biery, according to an article in the San Antonio Express-News. Fenti had pleaded guilty in the case in January, along with co-conspirator Dr. Heidi Webster, a radiologist at BAMC, on charges of committing wire fraud.
A radiologic technologist, Fenti was the chief noncommissioned officer at Brooke's radiology department, where he supervised enlisted personnel and facilitated equipment procurement. He and Webster were at the center of a scheme in which Fenti directed Army contracts and subcontracts to firms that Webster controlled.
Fenti got kickbacks from Webster for the contracts, and both paid bribes to other Army personnel and enlisted them in the fraud. Most of the other individuals have already pleaded guilty in connection with the scam. Webster will be sentenced in December, according to the newspaper.
