A Canadian health network is reviewing 4,000 imaging cases handled by one of its radiologists after a patient complaint showed an incorrect exam interpretation, according to a report published by St. Catharines Standard of St. Catharines, Ontario.
A team of 12 radiologists will review CT, MR, and mammography exams conducted at Niagara Health System between May 2014 and May 2015. The team will be led by Niagara Health System's chief of staff, Dr. Tom Stewart; the review process should take about three months, the publication reported.
The radiologist who originally interpreted the exams has not been named.
Patients will be notified if something is found on their exams, said Niagara Health System President Dr. Suzanne Johnston. Johnston also said that similar reviews conducted in other Canadian hospitals have found that less than 10% of scans were incorrectly interpreted, St. Catharines Standard wrote.
