Imaging Update - 2004 highlights India's commitment to radiology

Dear AuntMinnieIndia Member,

We are now more than a couple of months along in our effort to build a community for radiology in the India region. And I'm glad to say it is happening very successfully, thanks to the efforts and enterprise of imaging professionals in India.

Earlier this month radiologists got together at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune to share their knowledge and exchange ideas at Imaging Update - 2004. The conference was inaugurated by Lt Gen Punita Arora, the first female lieutenant general of the Indian army. And in a sense, the conference underlined the commitment of the world's fourth largest army to radiology. We bring you two reports from the conference, which you can access by clicking on the headlines below.

Also, the ninth South Asian Regional Conference on Clinical Ultrasonography in Practice got off to an exciting start in Chennai yesterday with two speakers of repute sharing their knowledge with an eager audience. We hope you were among them, but if not, you can still catch the nuggets on AuntMinnieIndia.com.

On a more serious note, ultrasound in India has been dogged by the stigma of being a tool for sex determination, resulting in female foeticide. Dr C.S. Pant, past president of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA), represents the views of the radiological community in the first meeting of the Central Supervisory Board (constituted under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act), chaired by the new health minister Dr Anbumani Ramdass.
