The American Academy of Neurology has issued a new guideline for the use of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound. The guideline, published in the May 11 issue of Neurology, provides recommendations for how TCD may be used to evaluate the status of blood vessels inside the brain in patients with known or suspected cerebral vascular disease, according to the Saint Paul, MN-based society.
Based on a review of all of the scientific evidence available on the use of TCD, the society said that TCD provides valuable information in two situations: screening children age 2-16 with sickle cell disease for risk of stroke, and in the detection and monitoring of vasospasms after subarachnoid hemorrhage.
