Eckert & Ziegler Therapeutics, a subsidiary of Eckert & Ziegler, has received authorization from German authorities to manufacture actinium-225 (Ac-225) under good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards.
This authorization clears the way for use of the alpha-emitting radioisotope in investigational patient treatments.
The production process uses cyclotron-based irradiation of radium-226 (Ra-226) at facilities of the Czech Academy of Sciences’ Nuclear Physics Institute, followed by processing at Eckert & Ziegler’s site in Braunschweig, Germany. The process keeps long-lived impurities such as actinium-227 and thorium-229 to a minimum and recovers unconverted Ra-226 for reuse across multiple production cycles, according to the vendor.
Eckert & Ziegler is also planning commercial-scale Ac-225 production at its joint venture facility in Jintan, China, after initial operations begin in early 2027. The firm also said it is considering further capacity expansion at its sites near Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., and in Germany.
