CT pioneer presents modality's wish list

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

SAN FRANCISCO - If you're a CT aficionado, the last seven years have been a dream come true. The arrival of multislice scanning in 1998 brought a renaissance to the modality that has resulted in more clinical applications, higher scanner sales, and renewed interest in CT from across healthcare.

But it's never a good idea to rest on your laurels, especially in a fast-moving industry like medical imaging. With that spirit in mind, CT pioneer Willi Kalendar, Ph.D., presented a wish list for future CT developments at this week's International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT. Staff writer Eric Barnes was on hand to report on the presentation for our CT Digital Community.

Kalendar's wish list ranges from a system with multiple x-ray sources and detectors to interactively variable isotropic spatial resolution. Interestingly, a 128- or 256-row scanner isn't one of the top five, as Kalendar questions the clinical necessity of such a system.
