Canadian radioisotope developer MDS Nordion of Kanata, Ontario, said that it has made the isotope copper-64 (Cu-64) commercially available.
Cu-64 is principally used as a PET imaging isotope that provides physicians with higher resolution images, according to the company. Cu-64 is advantageous in that it has a half-life of 12.7 hours and can be distributed commercially, eliminating the need for users to have an onsite isotope production facility, MDS Nordion said.
In addition, the firm said that there is growing interest in the use of Cu-64 in molecular imaging and biodistribution studies as part of the drug development process, as well as possible therapeutic applications for the treatment of disease.
