IBA debuts synthesizer, collaboration, and SNM grant

TORONTO - Ion Beam Applications (IBA) has developed and is completing tests for a new modular, multipurpose automatic synthesizer.

The synthesizer allows for the preparation of various PET radiopharmaceuticals and shows potential for use in developing new molecular probes, according to the Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium-based firm.

In related news, the vendor's Sterling, VA-based Eastern Isotopes subsidiary has entered into a scientific collaboration with Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, MA. The collaboration will focus on Molecular Insight's proprietary Ultratrace solid-phase radiolabelling technology and the iodine-124 (I-124) commercial production capabilities of Eastern Isotopes.

The firms will be working on furthering the development of I-124 meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) for the diagnosis and treatment planning of neuroendocrine malignancies such as neuroblastoma, pheochromocytoma, and carcinoid, Eastern Isotopes said.

IBA also announced that Eastern Isotopes has agreed to support a Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) educational grant for an undisclosed amount. The grant will fund a new SNM Web-based educational PET program for physicians, pharmacists, scientists, and technologists. The grant will also support a monthly PET teaching case study available on the SNM Web site. Both programs are expected to begin this fall.
